Well, it seems like half my flist have been doing this meme for ages now, so late adopter that I am I thought I'd give it a whirl. As my Nan used to say when scolding me about some act of childhood wrongdoing, "if he put his hand in the fire, would you do it?" Yes, sadly, I probably would... ;D
Day One: Your Favourite Quote
Well, one thing about Doctor Who is its years of sparkling dialogue, and not so sparkling but just-as-quotable dialogue. I mean, just about every word spoken in City of Death or half the random remarks the Master has ever come out with in any of his incarnations, or indeed "No, not the Mind Probe?" would be worthy contenders for this one. On reflection, however, there can be only one. It's my favourite because it is a lovely bit of writing and sums up a lot of Doctor Who's whimsical, wonderful appeal, and also because it's spoken by a Doctor who means a lot to me to a companion I equally admire. And also because it reminds me of watching Doctor Who on a tiny black and white portable TV in my granddad's back bedroom back when I was eleven (don't ask how this state of affairs came about). And also because, in hindsight it and the story it features in take on so much more significance when you know that was "it" for the old series, and it seems like a fitting moment for it to bow out on. I know the classic series isn't everyone's cup of tea, and that Seven isn't even a lot of oldschool fans' cup of tea, but I don't care; I can't watch the scene in question now without getting a bit of a tingle and a lump in my throat.
Why yes, I'm a sap.
It's this one, of course:
"There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, and the sea's asleep, and the rivers dream; people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, somewhere else the tea's getting cold. Come on, Ace. We've got work to do."
